Fortunately, it is rather simple to learn a few key points about diamonds so you can easily come off as knowing a little bit on the subject. This will make you seem well-rounded and worldly.

There are four C's of diamonds that jewelers everywhere live by. These guidelines and standards were set forth by the Gemological Institute of America. By having a uniform method in which jewelers grade diamonds, it makes for a more universal market. The first C is color. Diamonds come in just about every color you can imagine, but the ones that are most common actually lack color. White diamonds are your typical stones set in engagement rings or necklaces. They are a timeless classic.

The second C is clarity. This C can greatly influence the worth of your stone. Since diamonds are formed naturally within the earth, it only makes sense that they are not always perfect. Flawless diamonds are extremely rare and are also very expensive. Most diamonds have some sort of flaws. Blemishes are imperfections on the surface of the diamond, while inclusions are imperfections within the diamond itself. Although most are not visible to the naked eye, a jeweler can detect them with a special magnifying glass.

The third C is carat. This refers to the weight of your diamond and also affects the value of your stone. With all other factors remaining the same, the bigger the carat, the more valuable the stone. However, a small diamond and a large diamond can cost the same depending on the clarity and color. The final C is cut. There are so many different cuts for diamonds. It is a matter of personal preference as to which you prefer. However, cut does not just refer to the shape of the stone. It also includes the many facets cut into the certified loose diamond. This is what gives the stone its sparkle when exposed to light sources.
